Our goal is to protect the environment by reducing residual waste, using less energy, reducing water consumption, minimizing the use of chemicals and making sure transportation to and from our hotels is kept to a minimum. We want to reduce our ecological footprint and set an example for others to follow on how to run hotels and be environmentally sound.
We have a long way to go. However, we have also achieved a lot:
Reduced energy consumption
Between 2008 and 2011, we reduced water consumption by 19 % per guest night . However, our water consumption still amounts to 223 litres per guest night. We want to make it more attractive to conserve water.
Less residual waste
Between 2008 and 2011, residual waste per guest night was reduced by 45 %. Still, each guest night generates 0.6 kilos of residual waste. We – and, we hope, our guests – shall get even better at recycling.
Less electricity, more rainforest
Nordic Choice pays a voluntary CO2 tax for each guest staying with us. The tax goes to the Rainforest Foundation Norway, who conserves the rainforest on our behalf. This is extremely climate efficient. The more guests who stay with us, the more rainforest will be conserved.
ISO 14001 environmental certification
Nordic Choice has implemented the internationally recognized ISO 14001 Environmental Management System – a tool we put to active and dynamic use, in order to continuously improve our environmental record. Since 2007, DNV (Det Norske Veritas) has been our watchdog making sure our environmental efforts really live up to the standards we say we keep.
What the hotels do:
Nordic Light lit by LED
This hotel is at the forefront when it comes to integrating light design with the hotel experience. By using LED, we could create both decorative and energy efficient lighting. LED would reduce the total energy consumption at the hotel by 10 %.
The guest decides on the level of service
At Quality Airport Hotel in Stavanger, guests can decide to what extent the room should be cleaned. Guests often opt for the less extensive option, contributing to a reduction both in waste and the use of chemicals.
Quality Hotel Fredrikstad – the first palm oil free hotel in Norway
Quality Hotel Fredrikstad got tired of palm oil, which, in addition to being unhealthy, also contributes to the destruction of rainforests. See what they did!
Geothermal heating at Yasuragi Hasseludden
At hotel Yasuragi Hasseludden heated water plays an important role in the hotel experience. The heat is extracted from the ground via energy wells. This way we use less electricity and oil, thus protecting the environment.
Shark sponge from Bergen – drastically reducing the use of chemicals
Staff at Clarion Hotel Bergen Airport use a special sponge when cleaning – the same kind used by the Bergen Aquarium when cleaning their shark tanks – that has reduced the use of chemicals by 93 %.
